Today's class will consider individual-level identity within the broader contexts of leadership and organizational behavior. Among the topics we'll discuss are traits, characteristics, personality, with an emphasis on core concepts and relevant theories. We'll then turn our attention to the negative side, with an exploration of "The Dark Triad." Next, we begin our consideration of motivation with a look at key theories and ways of thinking about it. We wrap up with a look at emotional intelligence, where I can draw on my recent certification in the field as we apply what we discuss to a brief case study.
Here's our agenda for today:
- Review 7/8/25 class
- Today’s organizing questions
- Meet in teams for first time
- Meet in teams to discuss MacMillen, Lester & Lester, Goleman readings
- Discuss case study
- Present items due next class (7/15/25)
The organizing questions for today's class are:
- How do personality, values, self-perception, and perceiving others factor into leadership development?
- What’s the relationship between character, traits, and motivation? What are ways we can think about motivation?
- How does emotional intelligence provide a framework for understanding the role of emotions, attitude, and stress in organizations?
